Rodgers/Hammerstein = Zeppelin = Bollywood

This is a great example I found last week of who owns what when talking about music.

I stumbled upon this Bollywood song called Pyar Hai Gunah from the film Paapi (1975.)
The composer on this song is Bappi Lahiri, who’s notorious for his “samples.” He was definitely listening to some Led Zeppelin in the early 70’s because the wailing cry throughout his song, sung by Lata Mangeshkar, is a total lift from Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song which was recorded in 1970.

After doing some research and confirming with wikipedia, I found out that the melody from Immigrant Song is reminiscent of Bali Ha’i, a tune from the 1949 Rodger and Hammerstein’s musical South Pacific.
I guess Page and Plant were into show tunes :)
