God Loves Hair

Toronto based artist Vivek Shraya is a busy guy.  He’s released five records; his sound currently could be described as electro-pop.  He recently self-published a collection of short-stories God Loves Hair in which he shares his experiences about growing up brown and queer in Edmonton.  And, he’s currently working on a short-film exploring racism in the gay community.  I’m impressed.

God Loves Hair is cute.  Each story is illustrated by Juliana Neufeld who provides vivid visual interpretations.  The stories are sparse but still achieve a sense of intimacy.  The collection did leave me wanting more and I would have like to have seen the stories fleshed out.  Still, the book is a welcome addition to the small but hopefully growing body of Indo-queer voices.   Check his website for more info.

De La and Handclaps

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

The NXNE music festival took over Toronto this past weekend (along with the Much Music Video Awards and G20 cops who are drinking bars dry). I caught a few acts at their free stage on Sunday.4722350581_fda4068042.jpgThat’s The Phenomenal Handclap Band, which is made up of a gazillion talented hippies who make psychadelic-disco-rock stuff. Uh, yeah. They’re good, listen: think they were a little peeved at the stone-faced crowd. An outdoor venue meant bright sun and free meant a mixed crowd. The only one dancing was a wild gypsy lady. Her dreamcatcher nearly lobbed my head off. It was a strange line-up. Kid Sister followed and a bunch of folks started voguing. Chicago lives on! But everyone, I mean everyone, was there to see the final act: De La Soul.4723005178_04364e78eb.jpgI am happy to report that they have aged gracefully and are still funny as fuck. It was a frenzy of hands and trampling and dancing grannies. Check out the NOW Mag footage:

See you next year, NXNE!

Wilderness

On Friday I checked out my uber-talented friend Vladimir’s second solo show at Show & Tell Gallery. His work revolves around themes of zoology and wild animals. Colourful, funny, and sometimes freaky…just like Vlad.

Kali Ma was digging this cat:

Ol Cee Pee was enlightened by this monkey:

The most amazing Gay Chimp was the first one sold:

All the blood, sweat, tears, and smokes were worth it, Vladimir! It’s a fantastic collection; you can check it out online or in person (until June 27th).

Rose Garden.

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Our buddy Shad who we hung out with through the Warped Tour last summer dropped his new album, TSOL, last week. There are some solid jams on this album, make sure you to pick up a copy.

You can get the album on iTunes (Canada only) or here for the rest of the world.

Currylingus showed us the 1st video from the album last month. The HotDogGarbage crüe came thru again releasing a new video for Shad’s jam Rose Garden. Hey…. that futon at the end looks pretty familiar from last summers trip to TO.

The lovely ladies at Kaleid — a growing network of South Asian arts and culture hustlers in Toronto — did a short Q & A with *PMH over the weekend. Head over to Kaleid for a read and give them sweeties a salaam. Luh you girls!
