God Loves Hair

Toronto based artist Vivek Shraya is a busy guy. He’s released five records; his sound currently could be described as electro-pop. He recently self-published a collection of short-stories God Loves Hair in which he shares his experiences about growing up brown and queer in Edmonton. And, he’s currently working on a short-film exploring racism in the gay community. I’m impressed.
God Loves Hair is cute. Each story is illustrated by Juliana Neufeld who provides vivid visual interpretations. The stories are sparse but still achieve a sense of intimacy. The collection did leave me wanting more and I would have like to have seen the stories fleshed out. Still, the book is a welcome addition to the small but hopefully growing body of Indo-queer voices. Check his website for more info.
