Rodgers/Hammerstein = Zeppelin = Bollywood

This is a great example I found last week of who owns what when talking about music.

I stumbled upon this Bollywood song called Pyar Hai Gunah from the film Paapi (1975.)
The composer on this song is Bappi Lahiri, who’s notorious for his “samples.” He was definitely listening to some Led Zeppelin in the early 70’s because the wailing cry throughout his song, sung by Lata Mangeshkar, is a total lift from Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song which was recorded in 1970.

After doing some research and confirming with wikipedia, I found out that the melody from Immigrant Song is reminiscent of Bali Ha’i, a tune from the 1949 Rodger and Hammerstein’s musical South Pacific.
I guess Page and Plant were into show tunes :)

Check out all the clips below starting with………………

Tom, Dick and Harry Patel

My sister and I were talking the other day about when South Asians shorten their names to western names to “fit” in. We’re still surprised that younger generations still do it, very weird. I definitely run into this when I’m working on the Motel Project. I’m gonna go with Craig from now on, what do you think?

Here are some examples:

Chiraag = Craig

Govind = Gary

Sanmukh = Sammy

Ramesh = Randy

It reminded me of this short clip from Goodness Gracious Me, hilarious…….

Weekend.

deerhoof1.jpg

I finally got to see Deerhoof, one of my favorites, for the first time on Saturday.
It’s been a long time coming. Saunier destroyed the kit.

Also went to see a couple flicks. I lost 2 hours of my life watching the new bond film (I’m glad I didn’t pay to see it; thanks Mouse.), but I gained it right back when I watched Slumdog Millionaire on Sunday. Wow, Danny Boyle did a great job on this film. I highly recommend this one if you get a chance.

A.R. Rahman did the soundtrack, which was really well done. He even collaborated on a track with M.I.A. Check out this short Q and A with A.R. in New York Magazine, it’s pretty interesting.

Here’s the Q n A

Brown Man on the Moon….

Well not yet, just a probe that was sent by India, named Chandrayaan 1 and painted with the Indian flag. Check out this article on the BBC.

I’m not really for the individual space programs that this world has, I would rather them work as a team instead of individual countries. Don’t you think that would make a little more sense?

But I still think this picture of Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to travel in space, is killer.
I used this image on my other site that holds my client work for a short period of time.
Not sure if that really flew :)

Thanks Shilps .

It’s Friday Dance Time.

This video is pretty hot. What is that guy wearing at the beginning of the video???
I’m gonna go pick one up this weekend at American Apparel.

Mitch Mitchell.

RIP Mitch Mitchell
1947 - 2008

Mitch Mitchell, best known for being the drummer of the The Jimi Hendrix Experience, died earlier today of natural causes in a Portland Hotel room.

From Pitchfork…

Mitchell had a hand– two very able hands, in fact– in rock and roll history as part of the Experience in the late 1960s. He played in the Pretty Things and Georgie Fame’s Blue Flames before joining Hendrix, and even served as part of the Dirty Mac supergroup that John Lennon assembled for the Rolling Stones’ 1968 “Rock and Roll Circus” event, playing alongside Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, and Lennon himself. Two years after Hendrix’s death in 1970, he formed the trio Ramatam, and went on to do session work for a number of musicians and partake in several Hendrix tributes.

Most recently, Mitchell took part in the traveling “Experience Hendrix” tribute tour, which wrapped up its three-week run last Friday in Portland and also featured Mitchell’s latter day Experience bandmate Billy Cox.

Mitchell is the second drumming Jimi Hendrix collaborator to pass away this year; Band of Gypsys stickman Buddy Miles died in February.

Check out this fascinating article in Wired Magazine about the ‘Godfather of Bangalore.’

Indian law right now allows people to sit on a piece of undeveloped land and if they’re on it for a certain number of years it belongs to them. Squatters are now a weapon of the land mafia in Bangalore. In 2001, office space near the center of town sold for $1 a square foot. Now it can go for $400 a square foot.

There’s a great audio clip in the article as well.

He kind of looks like the guy in the previous post, The Hero.

What Up Hero?

I think I’m gonna start a Hero series. We’ll start with this one…..

M.F. Doomed

I found a pretty interesting story in the NY Times today about how M.F. Husain, India’s most famous painter, is afraid to go back home to India.

The 93 year old artists’ work become controversial in the mid 90’s, when he started to paint Hindu Goddesses in the nude. He got so many threats of violence from offended religious parties and didn’t feel too safe, so he decided to move to Dubai.

READ IT HERE.

These religious parties are crazy, let the man do his shit.
M.F. doesn’t seem to be doing that bad out there, he’s still painting and recently sold a piece in March for $1.6 million. I guess that’s how he can afford several lavish apartments, villas and five luxurious cars, including a Ferrari in Dubai. Dude can’t even drive!
